JYJ members Jaejoong, Yoochun, Junsu and Big Bang’s G-Dragon, Seungri, Taeyang, T.O.P, Daesung are top examples of ‘song writer’ idols today. Others include CNBLUE, each members of FTISLAND, IU, Juniel, CRAZYNO and others. These idols are writing and producing their own music.
JYJ had already begun song writing in 2010 when Junsu wrote and product the song, “Fallen Leaves.” JYJ has also created a recording room last year and have written and produced songs whenever they had time. Big Bang also took a big part in producing their own songs as well when making songs for their individual and group activities.
FTISLAND also included their original song, “Top Secret” in their new Japan album. Their Korean album included 7 songs that they helped produce and write.
CNBLUE leader Jung Yong Hwa is known to write songs and has written many for his fellow junior artists in their agency, FNC Entertainment. He has written songs for Juniel and AOA. 4minute’sHyunA has also written and produced songs for her new album as well.
Many idols are now debuting with their own original songs such as Juniel and CRAZYNO. It is usually rare to see a rookie debut with their own songs.
Idols have been debuting with songs written by producers and though they are praised for their great performances, they are becoming nothing but ‘puppets’ being controlled by the agencies.
A music critic commented, “It is important that these idols are now composing their own music. Idols will disappear someday and they need something else to back them up in the future.”
Songs that are written and produced by the idols themselves can also show their true character as well. They will feel more comfortable with the music they are doing and become more confident on stage as well.
An agency CEO commented, “Being able to produce and write your own songs is crucial for idols and singers. Learning how to produce and write is an investment for the future.”
